What if I took up more space?

What if I took up more space?
Album cover for DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS

When Bad Bunny reminded us that we have four months to learn Spanish, I laughed, feeling smug because I grew up bilingual; flowing in and out of different spaces and rituals. In English I learned to be formal, logical and efficient. Spanish was for singing, dancing and feeling emotions, deeply. My lifetime of culture clash was finally paying off and I could watch others work on skills I have accidentally refined over decades. Then I realized: I CAN'T RAP (in any language). And worse: I NEVER LEARN LYRICS.

And so the universe planted the seed for Superbowl Preppers.

If you don't know Bad Bunny's music, don't worry. I didn't pay attention to him until I read the New York Times article about his iconic residency in Puerto Rico and the US$400 million it generated for the island. He invited the world to his home for a party and they came. Each night was legendary, electric. It made me wonder, "Who is this person?" His business sense impressed me in English. The Spanish part of me wanted to see if his salsa was any good.

The first song from his latest album explodes. It fuses salsa, dembow, nostalgia, modernism and a vibe that jumps out of the speakers. It pulls you close and into the dance. As I listened to the rest of DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, I wandered deeper and deeper into the world of Bad Bunny and Benito, a thoughtful artist who takes up space bombastically. The energy is wild, delightful and rooted in a deep sense of home and nature.

He will give the halftime show for Superbowl LX in San Francisco on February 8, 2026. Not all American football fans are excited because Bad Bunny's culture is different. It's not easy to classify him because he doesn't fit into one box. He's fusion; he's Boricua and New York. His music evokes family, ritual, joy, protest, rage and celebration. It creates and destroys. It is not afraid to ask hard questions while dancing. His music holds paradox.

The idea behind Superbowl Preppers is to capture some of that lightening and weave it into our days. To be curious and explore. To sing off-key. To wrestle awkwardly with language and sounds. To twerk and dance. To explore fashion, history, rebellion.

Imagine. Sunday February 8, 2026. Watching TV with friends and family, with loved ones. You might be wearing a fur hat? The lights dim, the music starts and you can sing and dance with all of it. ALL OF IT.

Or, if you're not into football, but you love culture, see this as a chance to explore Puerto Rico and its deep rhythmic soul connection to what it means to be Latinx.

Or, it’s a chance to impress your friends, to be silly and learn some Spanish.

My intention with Superbowl Preppers is for us to learn some of his most popular songs, to dance and to push ourselves to be a little bit louder, to take up more space, to express and to grow. We will share our discoveries and celebrate each other.

This is also mindset work but we will talk about this later.
